In today's lesson:

We are learning to understand how text and images may be altered using ICT and be able to cite sources when you take information from the web.

Tasks:

1. You have been asked by a vegetarian organisation to create a document which lists some of the negative aspects of eating meat.

2. Using a search engine, find three facts that you could include from three different websites.

3. Try to choose one fact from a reliable website and two from less reliable sites.

4. Copy and paste the facts into this worksheet (remember to make a copy first!)

5. Make sure that you cite your sources.

6. Use http://search.creativecommons.org/ to find your sources.

7. Share your work with me and add it to your eportfolio.

Lesson 5 - Assessing Reliability

In today's lesson:

We are learning what URL stands for and whit it's different parts mean and how to assess a website in terms of it's reliability.

Tasks:

1. Go to www.123-reg.co.uk and type your first name into the search bar to see if you can find a domain name that is free.
2. In groups using the cards put the URL into the correct order.
3. Make a copy of the URL worksheet and fill it in.
4. Look at this website British Stick Insect Foundation Does the information seem true?
5. Find three things on the page that might indicate reliability and three that suggest unreliability.
6. Finally add an answer to this wall: 

Lesson 4 - Searching for Evidence

Last lesson we learned how to use filters on a search engine results page, and what each type of filter can do to your search query.

In today's lesson:

We are learning how to apply what we have learned about using a search engine to a research project of our own and identify what sources can help us find the answers we need.

Tasks:

1. Make a copy of this worksheet 'Searching for Evidence'
2. Answer the questions.
3. Make sure you have added all your classwork so far to your eportfolio for marking.

Lesson 3 - Narrowing a search to get results

Last lesson we looked at all the parts of a search results page and how they can help us make effective decisions about the information we choose.

In today's lesson:

• We are learning about all the Filters on the Google Search Results Page.
• You will be able to identify the parts of this page and be able to use all the parts to help you make decisions about what search result will help you.

Tasks:

1. Go to www.google.com and conduct a search for the query [stonehenge]
2. Log into Robert Clack Apps
3. Create a presentation
4. Give it the title: How to Use Google Search
1. Explain how to search for a result effectively (remember keywords, missing words, etc, from lesson 1)
2. Explain all the parts of the search results page.
3. Explain how to use filters.

Homework: 

Think of a topic that you want to create a research project around. For example (Is there life on other planets?)

Use a google search for your research project and print the first page of the google results page and bring it next lesson. Ask some of your subject teachers for ideas for research topics.

Highlight the search Query you have used.

Lesson 2 - Understanding Search Results

In the last lesson, you developed queries using key search terms tied to your research projects. In this lesson, you will eventually type in these queries and examine a search results page. Today we will look at search results pages and learn what information they give to help guide you through the research process.

In today's lesson:

• We are learning about the Google Search Results Page.
• You will be able to identify the parts of this page and be able to use all the parts to help you make decisions about what search result will help you.

Tasks:

1. Go to www.google.com and conduct a search for the query [nautilus pompilius]
2. Look at the search results page with a partner, discuss the results the page has given you. 
1. Are the results all the same or are they different?
2. What on the page gives you more information about the result?
3. Make a copy (File>Make a copy) of the Understanding search results worksheet and complete it. This presentation will help you.

Lesson 1 - Picking the right search terms

In today's lesson:

• We are learning to understand that the words we choose to type into a search tool like Google can affect the results it generates.
• You will be able to identify effective search terms and queries for use on your own research projects.

How Google Search Works

Tasks:

1. You will be put into groups by your teacher.In your group you will be given some questions. 
1. Using a yellow pen highlight the keywords.
2. Underline any maybe words
3. Add any missing words in blue.
4. Draw a line through any unnecessary words.

1. Make a copy (File>Make a copy) of this worksheet and answer the questions.
2. Don't forget to share the worksheet with your teacher and add it to your eportfolio.
